Following great progress over the weekend Sandra suffered a minor setback which necessitated her being put back temporarily on the respirator.
Amazingly enough after having the speech valve fitted yesterday she made such remarkable progress that the tracheotomy wss totaly removed this morning and for the first time since her illness she was able to converse totally unaided, thanking all the medical staff for all the help they had given her and even was even able to drink had her first cup of coffee.
In addition she was also able to take a few steps across the ward with support for stability and engage with some of the other staff members.
Later this afternoon however, she unexpectedly developed difficulty breathing and as a precautionary measure was put back on the respirator with a view to a temporary refit of the tracheotomy until the root cause has been identified and resolved.
In the meantime we continue to remain confident that the events of this afternoon are only a temporary setback and would ask you to continue to stand in faith with us and believe for her total recovery.
This weekend marks another landmark moment on Sandra's road to recovery as for the very first time in 4 weeks we were actually able to hear her speak.
After another reduction in the size of the tracheotomy fitting, she had a 'speech valve' fitted, this allows audible sounds to be produced from her vocal chords.
It's been great just to be able to hear own thoughts in her own words, something we have been anticipating for a long while.
Ironically one of the first things she was able to say to us was 'I want to go home' to which we greeted with rapturous delight.
Sandra continues to make great progress with her having another good day and in particular being able to stand on both her feet briefly for a few moments for the very first time.
As we look to the longer term one of the key areas for focus of our prayers is for the total removal of the tracheotomy. Clearly over the last couple of weeks this has caused her a level of discomfort which has on a few occasions resulted in her attempting to remove the fitting without any anaesthesia!
